September 8, 2024 - Sunday
We know that everything changes. This is the nature of life: to die. Nothing new would come if the old refused to die. Like leaves shedding from the trees, we fall and fall and fall, making room for new growth. Please child, drink from the wellspring of your ancestors. Eat of the nutrients we have gathered and stored for you.
We all, all of us, grow from the same tree. We may sprout from different branches, but our roots are all the same. We all need the same basic nutrients.
The tree is always growing in all directions. Roots continue to spread through the wet earth, branches continue to widen into space, trunks continue building new layers and rings of support while they perpetually reach up into the sky.
The purpose of our traditions is to trace your little leaf up into the branch from which you sprung, down through the layers and layers of tree trunk and down into the root system. It is as much your root system as it is ours, as it is your most beloved and most hated individuals. Do your best not to poison the roots. We all suffer when this happens. If you notice dead and diseased branches, do what you can to prune them away. We know you cannot save us all; that is not what we ask. We simply ask for you to care for what is in front of you, in the best way you know.
We know that everything changes. We know that someday, even you, young child, must die. We wish for you to open up to the knowledge that is within us. We are not angry with you, or anyone. We would have died someday, in some sort of way. Tradition changes. But it is always alive. It is always growing. We know this. We know this.
