The human mind - this "ego" you think you have - is not evil. It is not bad to be human. Even the gods sin. It is not simply the "human condition," but the prerequisite of conscious existence. Look how smart you all are! Translate thoughts and feelings into sounds, sounds into movement, movement to words on a page. It is not bad to be human. This is what all religions have gotten wrong, and it is the sole cause of most mental and emotional suffering.
"Why do you find it hard to do the right thing?"* Well, that depends upon one's definition of "the right thing." Most often, the people entirely convinced of themselves and their religion are actually the ones inflicting the most pain onto those around them. Pastors and preachers and priests harbor the most sin in their hearts, because they believe they have a way out. Jihadists are entirely convinced they are doing the right thing. Your grandmother who baptized herself in chlorinated water and salty tears truly believed that god did not like black people. Blind, unwavering faith incites hatred and violence.
*This question was in reference to something that a Jehovah's Witness asked me when unsolicitedly coming to my door and trying to convert me. I think I messed up her script when I said, "I don't find it hard to do the right thing."
I'm all alone
So I beg
In a circle of snakes
A life consumed by faith
From inside, I can hear their call
Fall in line now
Bow your head
I will suffer here instead of biting my tongue
Condemned to a life of pain, until my time has come
~ "Blinding Faith" by Knocked Loose
Keep telling yourself that you've been playing nice
And beg for forgiveness from Jesus the Christ

3 of Swords: Healing begins by removing the source of the pain. Constant attention to our pain keeps us from healing.
Religion is a method of reform, behavior rehabilitation. Some people need a god to tell them not to murder each other. This is for whom religion was made.
Men who have fought in wars they did not believe in, who killed innocents and other men who equally did not believe in the war - this is for whom religion was made.
Women whose babies died before they themselves - this is for whom religion was made.
