My Grandmother's Corpse: A Poem for Shadow Work

Look here, what I have for you

Everything I am and more

I will shift my shape

Kill the face you fell in love with

All to give you everything

Loyal to a fault

A dog at your side

I'll close my eyes while you

Pierce a spear through mine

Kill my confidence

Kill my eyes

Laid to rest

Never to fly

Complacent

Forgetting my place

Opening my mind

Til my brain falls out

But I have always been what I am

Everything else is an illusion

I will always be the thing beneath my shifting shape

Forever underground

Pushing towards the light

Moved to action by a deep fear

That I don't know what I am

Because no one has ever seen me

And all my mirrors are broken

I could never find the answers

Inside another's eyes

Yet still

I always try

I gave you my necklace

You never gave it back

"It was ugly," you said

Not the right color

So you smashed it to smithereens

And thought you had helped me

But it was taken from

My grandmother's corpse
